Beach Figures

This week's study involved the use of photographs of beach figures.  I think it is a bit of a challenge to teach people to create an impressionistic painting using photos.  You kind of have to un see what you see. and create what you do not see.  Anyways here is my little impressionistic study of a mother and daughter at the shore.  It is on auction this week on Ebay  CLICK HERE to visit the auction and my ebay gallery.

This week's project

This is what I have been working on this week.  I went to a friend's house out in the country for a fall bonfire/potluck.  Thankfully I had my camera with me.  I was struck in the gloaming, of how the grass was almost a spring green and the fall trees glowed with the last hurrah of the sun.  I threw in a dramatic sky in the background from a photo that I had taken earlier in the same week.  I had fun knitting the two together.

I begin with a wash of burnt sienna, a quick abstract of the basic composition, a block in of basic colors and then refine, refine, refine while trying to hold on to the painterly brush stokes and some of the under painting.  That is the trickiest part.  I will sit with this now for a week or so and give it another look to see if there are areas that need more work.

Head 'em off at the Pass

I live near one of the best western art museums in the country.  My favorite paintings there are the ones that are night paintings.  In the background you can see one.  Since I am an Oklahoma girl now, I figured I needed to have at least one or two cowboy/Indian themed paintings.  This one will be for sale at the upcoming Utica Square Arts in the Square next weekend, October 7th.

SOLD Prairie Clouds

Out on the prairie in Oklahoma, where I live, the horizon line can be very low.  Painting what's in front of you here in the wild places, I find my interest is often drawn upward to the sky.  I have a series of paintings of Oklahoma skies in my ebay gallery.  This is one of them.

Canoeing the Boundary Waters Margaret Aycock oil on canvas

Once upon a time when we were in our 20s we took a wonderful trip to the boundary waters between Minnesota and Canada.  This painting was inspired by that time we spent so far away from civilization in such a quiet place.... we finally decided that we would throw back any fish that wasn't 12 inches long, we were catching so many!

Turkish Figs in Conversation

We are still working small in my adult class.  Today's subject, Turkish Figs.  Don't they kind of look like they are in conversation?

Once upon a time a friend had a friend who brought his fig tree cuttings from the old country.  He spread them around to friends and years passed and one of those friends gifted me with a cutting.  10 years later our fig tree is going strong.  We painted these today and then shared the fresh figs with my class who all had only experienced figs by having them in fig newton form.  The fresh ones are a tasty delight.  This one is on auction this week w the starting bid of $43 and FREE shipping.  I also have a painting that starts at $33 this week.  If you can find it on my ebay gallery site, it could be yours.  Decided to put a few lower priced things on this week just for fun.  Adding some new ones each day.

6x6 Kitchen Paintings on Ebay this week

I am working on a series of little kitchen paintings this summer.  My students are glad to work on a few paintings that are finishable in one session.  I am making them work fast because their subjects just won't last so they simply must throw caution to the wind and jump in.  They are all on my ebay site on auction today... at least the ones that I have finished.  They are all 6x6 and have a starting bid at or below $60 with no reserve.  If you are interested in a whole series, let me know and I will get you a good price on a set.... name your veggie or fruit and I would be happy to work on some commissioned pieces for you as well.

SOLD Getting ready for OVAC's 12x12 fundraiser

I was thinking I might paint something specifically for the fundraiser this year but then decided to take a 2 week vacation.  When I got home I was revisiting some older paintings and decided to play with this one.  The first is what it used to look like and the 2nd includes a new sky that was inspired by a photo that I took a week before going on vacation out in the wilds of Oklahoma.  I think it looks wonderful.  Can you notice any other changes that I made?

Cherries

Well I have been playing with my food again.  One of my students needed a quick subject and I brought him some cherries and a few hours later he had a wonderful painting.  Not to let my students have all the fun, of course, I joined him and this is one of two paintings that I did.  They make great kitchen paintings.  I will be working on another series as the rest of the students were so impressed with the fun result that they all want to do one too.  Next week.... peaches.
Oh, this one and its sister painting are on auction this week with a low start price and no reserve.  To visit my ebay auction and gallery, Click Here

Apricots 8x10 oil

When I have a student or two who works faster than the rest, I often set up subjects for quick sketches.  These are often my favorite paintings as they are very immediate responses to what is present.  They must be done within one sitting so you often have to throw details out the window and just have fun with it.  This time around I decided to join my quick student and this was the result.
