Tomato on a Green Plate

I reworked an older painting to go in a series of fruit on plates. Anyways here is the new one! I just listed it on ebay but haven't put it on auction so it is listed at the retail price. It is oil on stretched canvas as are most of mine. It is 6x6. Write if interested or place a bid on ebay.

This is the last one in a series of cedars paintings that I have done. This one is 8x10 on stretched canvas and framed with a simple slat frame. I don't know how many times I have passed this scene before being struck by the beauty one day as I drove home from painting class. Perhaps it is the painting that helps us to be open to seeing the beauty of the things that surround us? Anyways..... This is a little hill side that sits right off the highway next to the college that is near my house. I loved how the deep shadows filled the unusually bright hillside. It was at the gloaming of the day. My favorite time! I drove by, turned the car around and parked long enough to create a lovely little painting. It will be on my ebay site this week. We have been out of school forever around here because of ice and snow. That is the bad news. The good news is that I have a lovely foreign exchange student who is willing and able to model for our portrait group.

A Little Beach Talk 6x6 Oil on Canvas SOLD

As the ice is slowing everyone else down around here, it is causing creativity to flow in me. I am having such fun being snowed in. This bright little painting warmed me up better ( well almost better ) than a nice cup of hot chocolate! I will try to get a better picture out tommorrow when the sun comes out. It really is not blurry although it is impressionistic. I may have to play around a little more with my beach pics tomorrow as I bet my college class will be cancelled yet again. Macintosh Apple on a Green Plate 6x6 SOLD

Well, I am still iced in and I must say.... loving it! Nothing to do but paint. I am getting around to correcting paintings that have been sitting around begging for attention for years and working on a few bright little fun 6x6s. Here is my 6x6 oil on stretched canvas. When I was a little girl I lived in upstate NY where the Macintosh was the king of apples... or was it Queen? Anyways I ran across some in the supermarket and stocked up. South Carolina Fruit Stand, Oil 6x6

On my bi-annual trip back to the beach I cataloged my trip with my camera so that I could paint those nice warm beach figures in my Oklahoma winter. Next best thing to a hot cup of coco to warm a person up. We stopped on the way home to get an ice cream cone at a roadside stand. I loved the bright colors of all the fruit. They went well with all of my bright beach figure paintings. Anyways this one is here for bid on ebay this week. I really liked the way it turned out and tried taking a photo of it w both of my digital cameras, with and without a flash, each one with different results and neither one really captured it. It is a little brighter than the photo here and the left side box isn't so blue as it shows up here. It is a bit greyer. Everything is a bit sharper yet looks very impressionistic. This is a bit more complicated than my one object paintings and starts at a higher price. It is a winner. ( in my humble opinion ) Starts at $99 midwest-fine-art

Well we are snowed in here in Tulsa so disregard what I said earlier that I didn't have much time to paint. I have gotten around to finishing the little 8x10 painting of our last big ice storm a few weeks ago. I have a little fire in my wood stove with baked potatoes and a roast on the hot coals now. I have had a chance to paint all day only stopping to sip a bit of chai or coffee. I am working on a portrait of my foriegn exchange student and finishing a commission and just having a darned good time. Portrait of a Young Man in Oil, art for under $100

This portrait sketch is painted in oil and unlike all of my usual daily painter paintings, this one is on a stretched 16x20 canvas. I paint portraits once a week when I am not teaching my college class and during Christmas break I was able to make it to one of them. This young man was also on break from his college studies and agreed to sit for us. Happy Bidding. I figured I could squeeze one more tomato painting out of this little tomato before it goes bad or I eat it. These little paintings always look better in real life as my camera just doesn't capture them as well as I would like. This one is 6x6 on stretched canvas. It is an oil painting as all of mine are. I still can't seem to capture digitaly these tiny paintings . This is a 6x6 painting in oil. The tomatoes are pretty bright red with a cool white background. The brush strokes are quite visible. Our River SOLD

There has been a lot of talk here in Tulsa about making changes to our river. The Arkansas River runs right through our town. I think it is beautiful just the way it is and wanted to do a series of paintings of it before someone comes along and re directs the water and puts a bunch of high rises on a man made island in the middle. Tin Roof Art Show

Hey all you locals....
We are hosting another art show benefiting Brady Heights Neighborhood Association's Art Parkway Project. It is a great way to make a difference in your city and put a little cash in your pocket too. We are giving the artists 40% of their sales. So here's the plan.... I have the tin pieces at my house. They are ceiling tins that are squares inside of squares. Use your imagination and create something wonderful for this year's silent auction. The artists set the minimum bid and we have found that lower is better if you expect to sell and of course, quality work sells better than something just thrown together. You can paint on these, do mosaics, create a 3 D piece etc. Allow me to brag just a little.... The one I did for the last show sold for $500 so I will definately be at it again this year. Margaret Aycock Paints the Still Life....New DVD

I have two instructional DVDs for sale. They are self produced and I am still learning the ropes so be gentle :-) The first is me painting the Bouguereau piece called L'Attente. It is a demonstration on how the masters painted using and underpainting, glazing and direct painting. It is about 2 1/2 hours long.

The second one is me demonstrating the process I usually use when I paint still life. It is also about 2 1/2 hours long. I have both paintings on ebay for sale as well as the DVDs. Of course you can aslo order them from me by emailing me through this blog and through pay pal. They are both $16. A bargain !!!

Both of them are a little peek into my wonderful adult class here in Tulsa.

Workshop at Gilcrease Museum

All you Oklahoma artists who work during the week now have a chance to take a mini workshop with me. I will be teaching Still Life Painting in the Impressionist style on the 21st and 22nd of October. Write me for details or call the education dept. of the museum. We will be painting in the newly refurbished Gilcrease Home on the Museum grounds. Should be tons of fun... Plan to eat at the Rendevous Resteraunt for lunch.

New Web Site for Tulsa Portrait Painters

I am a member of a longstanding portrait group in Tulsa. Years ago we met at the Philbrook Art Museum. When they started their several years of remodeling we moved to Whiteside Park where we paint portraits religiously once a week. I guess I shouldn't say " paint " portraits as the group is very diverse and is open to those who wish to sketch in pencil, charcoal, watercolor, pastel,acrylic and oil. We have yet to have a sculptor join us but that would be fun too. The group is always open to new artists joining. Prepare to pay the wopping $3 model fee and bring your own supplies. We meet at 11:15 on Tuesdays and we paint till 2:15. We use live models and paint from the same pose. We are open to and encourage our models to show up in an interesting outfit. Just a note for those of you who might be looking for painting lessons this year. I teach an ongoing class at Zieglers for beginners through advanced. I teach demonstration style which is the way I learned years worth of technique in a very short time. ( forget the 4 years of piddling around in art school ) Anyways..... It occured to me that some of you might live in the area and might be interested in this. I currently have a small show at Lolas down on Main and Brady. This is a portrait show. Lolas is a great place, wonderful food, music and staff..... and then of course, there is Lola :-)

My son, Dylan who is on tour this summer has left a show of his art work for us to remember him by while he is gone. His work can be seen at the very cool, Shades of Brown Coffee house on Peoria and 33rd. I have some of his abstracts in my ebay store as well. Some Recent Paintings

Here is the latest thing I have been working on with artists in the Oklahoma area. I don't know what it is like in the art world at large but around here we are asked to donate to a lot of fundraisers where there is no split with the artists. We have been banning together and agreeing to ask for a portion of the sales. Here is a copy of the letter we drafted several years ago. It was recently adopted by the Tulsa branch of Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition.

As artists we are asked many times through out the year to donate our work to various charities for use in fund raising. We love to be able to help our community in this way.

We would like to provide a way in which your charity will be able to make a greater profit using our artwork. We respectfully request that charities share a portion of the profits with the artist. In this way you will benefit in retaining a higher quality of work from the artist, which will bring a higher price at your auction or event. Keep in mind that our canvas and framing often takes up 25-30% of the cost of our painting. We would hope that you would choose to give back to the artist at least 40-60% of your sale.

When artists are asked to donate without a share of the profit it really puts us in a bind. Those of us who are struggling to make a living at this can’t afford to give away the piece that we can sell in a gallery but we also can’t afford to put pieces that aren’t quite gallery quality out in public. You also may not be aware that artists are unable to claim the value of their donation on their income taxes. We are only able to claim the cost of supplies used.

When charities split the profits with the artist every one wins. The artist is able to keep only their best work in circulation, benefactors get a quality piece of art, the charity makes a greater profit and may be able to get more than one piece from the artist.

It is for these reasons that members of Oklahoma Visual Artists Coalition will willingly donate to organizations that adopt these practices and we will also respectfully decline all offers where there is no split with the artist.
