SOLD Getting ready for OVAC's 12x12 fundraiser

I was thinking I might paint something specifically for the fundraiser this year but then decided to take a 2 week vacation.  When I got home I was revisiting some older paintings and decided to play with this one.  The first is what it used to look like and the 2nd includes a new sky that was inspired by a photo that I took a week before going on vacation out in the wilds of Oklahoma.  I think it looks wonderful.  Can you notice any other changes that I made?

Cherries

Well I have been playing with my food again.  One of my students needed a quick subject and I brought him some cherries and a few hours later he had a wonderful painting.  Not to let my students have all the fun, of course, I joined him and this is one of two paintings that I did.  They make great kitchen paintings.  I will be working on another series as the rest of the students were so impressed with the fun result that they all want to do one too.  Next week.... peaches.
Oh, this one and its sister painting are on auction this week with a low start price and no reserve.  To visit my ebay auction and gallery, Click Here

Apricots 8x10 oil

When I have a student or two who works faster than the rest, I often set up subjects for quick sketches.  These are often my favorite paintings as they are very immediate responses to what is present.  They must be done within one sitting so you often have to throw details out the window and just have fun with it.  This time around I decided to join my quick student and this was the result.

Cool Down

It has been a couple weeks w triple digit temps in Tulsa so I thought it was time to revisit this painting.  My nephew was lucky ( According to him... not to me... as this would be way, way too cold for me.) to visit a glacier in Patagonia a couple of years ago.  He posted this photo which really captured my imagination.  This was really fun to paint.  I like the play between cold and warm.  It kind of looks inviting.  I have it on auction this week on ebay.  If interested in visiting my ebay gallery CLICK HERE

Billowing Clouds on Osage Landscape

A common theme in my work is the amazing skies that show up, unobstructed, in our Oklahoma landscape.  I didn't know that as a child, I must have been a Woody Guthrie fan as barbed wire fences and no trespassing signs meant very little to us kids.  We traipsed over many a farmer's pasture and woods in our day. And now when I see an old oil road heading off into the wilds of Oklahoma, it just beckons me forward.

Here is the line from Oklahoma born, Woody Guthrie ( whose birthday is this week )
As I went walking I saw a sign there
And on the sign it said "No Trespassing."
But on the other side it didn't say nothing,
That side was made for you and me.

Starting bid is $399 w no reserve.

Rainy Night in Tulsa

This is a painting that I did from a photo of Tulsa at night that I took last year.  The photo was just after a rain and I wanted to make this painting a little later in the evening and a little more rainy.  I just darkened everything a bit and softened some edges w some diagonal brush strokes to indicate both rain and fog.  Hopefully I was able to pull it off.  This one is for sale by auction through my ebay gallery or you may contact me directly for purchase.  Click here to visit my ebay gallery and view the rest of my auction items and full price paintings on Ebay

Another Oklahoma Sky

Billowing Clouds on an Oklahoma Prairie, 16x20  oil painting by Margaret Aycock.  One thing Oklahoma does very well is amazing skies.  I get lots of inspiration around here and up on the Osage Prairies. I had been working on a painting of an Oklahoma sky in my adult painting class and when I came home, the sky presented me with a beautiful, ever changing display of white, billowing clouds.  I grabbed my paints and went outside to paint en plein aire.  Some of this is from memory of a couple of different spots that are in the countryside of Oklahoma.

A Day in the Garden

Tis the season for painting in the garden.  gosh, trying to find a 3 hour stretch where there is no rain in the forecast is tricky but we did it.  I had my adult class over for painting in the garden yesterday.  We had such a wonderful day.  We did one sketch that we will work with in the studio next week to finish.  I don't have a lot to do to finish my sketch but will work on it a bit.  Here are some pics of the day.  You will find them in my ebay auction when finished.  Until then here is one that is up for bid now.

Portrait

My adult class wanted to learn some techniques to do a portrait in oil so I lead them through a step by step method used by the old masters.  First a wash of burnt umber, then a sketch in burnt umber w shadows, lights... like a sepia toned old photo.  Next a spray of damar retouch varnish, after it dries apply a transparent layer of skin tone, sky, grass etc.  Last step is opeque paint.  or maybe one more step... you can apply another glazing coat on the final piece to give warmth to the cheeks for instance.
Anyways here is the process using  a painting by Thayer as a jumping off point.  The finished piece is on ebay auction this week.  To Visit my Ebay Gallery.... CLICK HERE

Foragers

I was playing around with this painting today and as I was scrolling through my many paintings I began to notice how many paintings I had done with woman foraging.  I never intended to paint all these paintings but I guess you gravitate towards things you love and they show up in your work whether you mean them to or not.  I love to forage, take walks and explore the wild places.  I am committed to the preservation of our gifts of land, water, air and of course the biodiversity that sustains us.

Herbalist outstanding in her field.... or is she out standing in her field?  ;-)  Either way... This is my friend, Louise who had visited my house and gotten a little chilly as she went out to my garden to see what I had growing out there, and borrowed my red shawl.... and no, this isn't a painting of my garden.  I combined a couple of photos to create this painting.  Since I love to forage and ramble around the fields around our home, I decided to put her in a field of flowers.
