Painting in the great outdoors in Oklahoma

We had a delightful plein air workshop at the RossMar Ranch this weekend.  I had 10 eager painters with me.  The weather held out for the whole day although it was a bit nippy in the morning.  Thanks to my layers of long underwear and multiple shirts, sweaters and jackets, I was prepared for what ever the day had to offer.  I demonstrated one oil sketch in the morning and one in the afternoon.  We will take both back into the studio this Thursday and will work with any students who want to complete their paintings.  ( Mine included as they are not quite ready for prime time :-)

Pre Raphaelite Girl 16x20 oil on canvas

In my adult painting class we usually start with a master painting and use it as a jumping off point in which to do a work of our own.  Since I teach demonstration style I like to have the same source material available to all students which in an ideal world, would be a live model but in our case we are working with first time painters and there is a lot to teach about measuring, how to hold the brush, paint mixing, values, etc so it is easiest to work from photos.  I included 2 photos that we used to spark our imaginations.  It is remarkable to watch what everyone comes up with using the same photo.  We often find that there is a slight resemblance to the artist in the work.  Anyways, this one is on auction this week through ebay with a very low start price and no reserve.

Louise's Chocolate Cake

I am thankful that my friend, Louise is such a good baker and I am thankful that I have enough self control to not eat it all before some of it gets painted.  I just got this great cloth at a garage sale and decided to include it in the pic.  I am working on a second ( a little smaller ) painting that I will post soon.  This one can be purchased through my blog for $100.  ( only $3 shipping)You can have your cake and hang it too! :-)   You can purchase the whole book ( not piecemeal ) through my blog as well.

Fall Sky on the Prairie 6x6 oil on canvas by Margaret Aycock

This is one of my little sky paintings. The size is 6x6 and is an oil painting on stretched canvas. I love the idea of daily painting. What a great, affordable way to start collecting art and keeping our artists painting..... a win win for everyone. Right now I have a great collection of my series of local musicians hanging on my kitchen wall. I used to have some sky paintings there but dang it, people kept buying them :-) They are pretty and fun to paint. If you want to purchase this one you may do so here. It costs $99 with $5 for shipping. If you want to see more of my work click here to go to my ebay store. To find out more about me and my work click here to go to my blog
